Biography and Career

Born in Busan, South Korea, Woozi is an only child who grew up in a musical environment. From a young age, he immersed himself in classical music, playing the clarinet and other band instruments. This early training forged his discipline and exceptional musical ear.

After joining Pledis Entertainment, Woozi underwent 5 years of training before his debut. He was initially a member of the pre-debut group "Tempest" with other future SEVENTEEN members, but the group disbanded before they could officially debut. Alongside his idol training, he attended the prestigious Hanlim Multi Arts High School and continued his studies at Hanyang University in the Practical Music K-pop division.

Although he was initially destined for the Performance Team due to his athletic abilities (he played baseball as a catcher in elementary school), his undeniable talent for composition led him to become the leader of the Vocal Team. It's in this role that he flourished, becoming SEVENTEEN's main composer and producer.

His first official solo mixtape, "Ruby", released on January 3, 2022, marked a turning point in his solo career. Woozi enlisted for military service on September 15, 2025, and is expected to be discharged on March 14, 2027.

Interesting Facts

🎵 Musical Genius

Woozi composes and writes the lyrics for the majority of SEVENTEEN's songs. The media has nicknamed him a "composing monster" due to his incredible productivity. He represents about 80% of the group's musical composition and handles all aspects of album production: concept, melodies, lyrics, and even track order.

His three favorite songs among those he's produced are SEVENTEEN's "Very Nice," I.O.I's "Downpour," and SEVENTEEN's "Super." He has also collaborated with artists like Ailee, Kanto, and EXO's Chanyeol for the song "Give Me That."

👤 Personality and Habits

Woozi is known for being serious, calm, and methodical. His perfectionist approach has earned him the nickname "Documentary" because he can be very serious about his work. His other nickname, "Tofu," refers to his fair skin.

Despite his small stature (the shortest among SEVENTEEN members), Woozi compensates with his remarkable work ethic. Other members have named him the hardest working member of the group, alongside Hoshi. S.Coups has even said he feels somewhat guilty because Woozi acts more like a leader than he does, being the one who truly makes SEVENTEEN work.

🎨 Hobbies and Tastes

Woozi loves listening to music, playing video games on the computer, and watching anime — a passion he's cultivated since childhood. He's also a fan of the X-Men series and enjoys watching movies featuring Hugh Jackman.

His favorite colors are black, grey, and navy blue. Food-wise, he loves rice, Jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) mixed with spicy ramen noodles, and adores Coca-Cola. However, he can't handle very spicy food or curry.

🤝 Relationships and Friendships

Although he may seem shy and distant at first, Woozi develops deep and lasting relationships once he feels close to someone. He's friends with B.A.P's Himchan. Within the group, DK admitted having an initially awkward relationship with Woozi, which led the latter to jokingly call him "Dokyeom-shi" (formal form).

Many fans and media have noticed his resemblance to BTS's Suga, going so far as to say Woozi looks like Suga's younger brother. He was actually invited to Suga's show, "Suchwita," in April 2023.

🌟 Special Traits

Woozi has shared that the meaning of his real name is profound: "Ji" means "know" and "Hoon" means "service," combined to give "know my service."

He's also admitted feeling a certain pressure as SEVENTEEN's main composer, fearing that if the group fails, it would be his fault. Yet, nothing makes him happier than hearing fans say their songs are good.

Woozi appeared in several MVs before his SEVENTEEN debut, including Hello Venus's "Venus," NU'EST's "Face," and Orange Caramel's "My Copycat."
