MOMO was born in Kyōtanabe, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. She started taking dance lessons at the age of 3 to follow in the footsteps of her older sister, Hana. She was spotted by JYP Entertainment thanks to a dance video where she performed with her sister. MOMO auditioned for JYP in 2012 and joined the agency, although her sister didn't make the cut.

Despite her elimination on the sixth episode of the show Sixteen, MOMO was added to the group TWICE by J.Y. Park, who was impressed by her incredible dancing talent. Since then, she has become an essential figure in the group, often nicknamed "the dancing machine".
