Joshua was born on December 30, 1995, in Los Angeles, California. Although ethnically 100% Korean, he grew up in the United States, in an environment very different from that of his future groupmates. As an only child, he was raised in a practicing Christian family, hence his American first name Joshua. Before becoming an idol, he led a relatively normal life in L.A., between school, church, and his passions for music and anime.

In 2013, Joshua made a life-changing decision: he left the United States to join Pledis Entertainment in South Korea.
